People ask us why we ride a motorcycle. For those who have experienced the joy, no explanation is necessary; for those who have not, no explanation is possible.

Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.
Life may begin at 40, but it doesn’t get real interesting until about 110!
You start the game of life with a full pot o’ luck and an empty pot of experience…The object is to fill the pot of experience before you empty the pot of luck. If you wait, all that happens is that you get older.
Midnight bugs taste best.
Saddlebags can never hold everything you want, but they CAN hold everything you need.
Never try to race an old geezer, he may have one more gear than you.
It takes more love to share the saddle than it does to share the bed!
The only good view of a thunderstorm is in your rear view mirror.
Never be afraid to slow down.
Don’t ride so late into the night that you sleep through the sunrise.
If you ride late, make sure you ride with the Sun coming-up…

Never hesitate to ride past the last street light at the edge of town.

A good mechanic will let you watch without charging you for it.

I’m Patch Holder Number 2!

Back in November, my brother Ted Kautz went riding on without us.

We still miss you brother.

As of today, we now have memorial patches for sale at Alaska Leather for $10.00. For those interested, we have several.

I’m patch holder number 2 behind Patricia, his beloved – and I’m OK with that!

Ride To Work Day!

Mayor Sullivan has proclaimed June 20th as Ride To Work Day with free parking in any MOA parking area! Please read the attached proclamation of his directing motorcycles and scooters free public (MOA meters and lots) parking that day!

12 Things We Learn From Our Bikes

Two Too Soon: Ted Kautz

So another friend has passed last Friday. Luckily I spend some quality time with him & his wife the previous Saturday at the celebration for Gene Burrill, & was able to take pictures of him.

Last Friday ABATE of Alaska lost our VP, Ted Kautz.

Ted, was an avid supporter of ABATE, it’s values & mission. ABATE lost a good friend who made us all laugh, and we will miss him.

To Patricia, Chairman of the Board, we are deeply saddened by your loss as is all of the motorcycle community.

The service for Ted Kautz will be held at the Lake Otis Cremation Society (7216 Lake Otis Parkway) at 4 PM Thursday November 18.

There will be a potluck Celebration of Life to follow at the Buckaroo Club (2811 Spenard Road) at 5 PM. It is requested that you bring a dish if possible. Cash donations are requested to support the family.

ABATE encourages everyone to come out & celebrate the life of a good man, husband, father & supporter.

You Will Be Missed Xray!

There are people you meet on the road of life. Good, bad & in between.

For bikers, the term ‘Brother’ has a special meaning. It means more than just a good friend. It denotes that you have a bond tighter than friendship…sometimes even beyond family.

Today I lost one of my brothers.

Gene ‘XRay’ Burrill was one of those easy to get along types. You know, that person who’d light up your day with an easy demeanor and smile. Even when he was ‘upset’ he was still a pleasure to be around as he would take that positive spin to a down situation.

He was also a man of talents having his band amongst other things.

Gene and his lovely Kelly were the people you were happy to see and they were happy to see you.

Gene went on tonight while I was riding so I will consider this ride tonight our last ride.

To Kelly, my heart goes out to you and your family at the time of loss.

Gene, it was a pleasure to call you a brother and I will miss you.

Tips For Riding in Fog!

With the weather in Anchorage, being what it’s being (heavy fog advisory for three days), I’ve been riding in the fog and I have to say it has not been one of my favorite motorcycling activities.

So I decided to share some tips on riding in fog for my fellow riders and to share some of my observations to help ensure a better or safer way to travel in this weather hazard.

An immediate concern about riding in the fog is the misting of your helmet face shield & windshield. The vapor the fog puts on the face shield/windshield is very fine and does not normally roll off like rain drops. The water vapor in thick fog does not bead up and run off like rain. It does bead up, but they are tiny beads and they tend not to run. Be ready to have to pull over to wipe the mist away with a glove or rag. Depending on how thick the fog is expect it to come right back to obscure your vision. Also be aware that the mist will identify any streaks or obstructions that may not have been noticed before.
Should you decide to use a rag, try to use a clean area as the mist will be attracted to any dust or other contaminants. It could be better to just let the mist remain as opposed to wiping off the visor/windshield!
Obviously visibility to other traffic is diminished considerably. One strategy is to ride behind the car in front of you and stay with it while in the fog. Oncoming traffic as well as traffic from the rear can better see a car with it’s lights on than a motorcycle with its lights on. The drawback would be the dreaded pile-up, so stay alert for such a situation.
In Anchorage, be extra careful of the ‘rubberized’ strips as the water will make it extremely slick on turns & braking.
Remember your wet weather gear. While it may seem that it’s dry enough, you will become wet from the vapor. Remember that the vapor that is on the visor/windshield is also collecting on all exposed areas of the bike & you!
Lastly, avoid using your high beam or passing lamps in fog (especially at night) as that this tends to hamper your visibility even more. The light reflects off of the water droplets in the fog and the glare is worse with the more light used, decreasing visibility.
Riding in fog is taxing, more so than riding in bright sunshine so take it easy.

It’s better to arrive late than to not arrive at all!
