Yo! It’s Still TRIKE SEASON!!!!!
Earlier this week one of our friends went down on her birthday. Luckily for all of us the biggest damage was to her pride and her bike.
Now I know the roads look good…they really do, but there is still ice out there!
And that’s not the worst of it!
Lets not forget our old friend…gravel. Every year they toss gravel and salt on our roads. Salt melts away with the snow, but gravel stays to become a dangerous hazard to the motorcyclist.
I realize it’s cool to say you’ve ridden…sure, I’ll grant that. But is it worth limb? Your bike? Worse yet…your life?!?
I guess I’ve gotten up enough in years to realize I’d rather wait now than risk not being able to ride during the short season we do have.
If you feel you have to prove something, prove you can ride during the riding season - ride in all the bad weather and put miles on.
Please….don’t get the throttle stuck on stupid.
Signs And Portents - The Future Of Being Able To Choose.
Received this article from a friend today: Puerto Rico Passes Strict Motorcycle Law.
For those not in the know, the NTSB has made a recommendation that all states enact a Universal helmet law: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/11/AR2007091101225.html.
Looks like the federal government is going to try for a National Standard for Motorcycle Helmets and a National Helmet Law. There are some interesting points that have come out since this has started:
- MRF Opposes NTSB Helmet Law Recommendation
- MRF Call to Action RE: NTSB Helmet Law Recommendation
- AMA on NTSB Helmet Law Recommendation
Like the AMA, I know that wearing a helmet is a lifesaver but I believe in the right to choose. If we need to have a national helmet law it should be copied from Florida’s sensible helmet law: over 21 no helmet if you have medical insurance. Under 21, wear a helmet. It leaves the decision in adult hands and removes any burden on the taxpayer if the rider decides to splatter their brains.
Am I Seeing The NEXT Generation Of Bikers?!?
I don’t know if it’s happening to anyone outside of Alaska, but of late I’ve had lots of younger adults and teens giving me the “hang loose” sign when I ride by them.
It’s been interesting to see people give the sign when I pass them (or pass by them) on the road or when I go to a store, work, etc.
In reflecting with friends on this I’ve come to my own conclusion (for example, Minx says I just look so good on my bike that I have “insta-fans” when I ride by
Another Sad Fatality This Weekend
Heather Williams was the young woman who was killed on Saturday evening at mile 111 Seward Hwy. She was 29 years old, with three children and her husband, Mike, is a member of the Alaska National Guard deployed in Iraq.
The bike she was riding was a borrowed 650 V Star.
Heather had very little motorcycle experience and no license, she had not yet been through any training. Apparently she crossed the yellow line between McHugh Creek and Beluga Point. She hit the pickup on the passenger side, an indicator of how far she was out of her lane. She was not passing a vehicle nor was alcohol a factor as first rumored.
The Alaska National Guard, along with the Red Cross, is working to transport her husband out of Iraq immediately. Our prayers go out to Mike and the rest of her family as they struggle to deal with this tragedy.
2007 HOG State Rally…Fairbanks - Part 1
Went to the HOG State Rally, which was in Fairbanks (pretty much rotates between north & south in Alaska for now) this year.
Lots of the same familiar faces as well as some new ones! Minx and I always appreciate going to the rally as it’s a great place to meet & greet as well as hookup with many people we have not been able to connect with (for whatever reason). We can all let our hair down and enjoy three days of fun.
We took off Thursday morning. A little chilly, but warm enough that it wasn’t a bother. As usual, we left Anchorage and had breakfast in Wasilla (we normally eat at the 49er at four corners, but it has been closed this year) at the Trout House - formerly Windbreak Cafe.
Poker Run for Face and Mary
There is a poker run being setup as a fund raiser for Face & Mary (who went down Memorial Day weekend after the Beyer's Lake event) for the Saturday, June 23rd. It's a ride from Anchorage to Seward - specifically to end up at the Pit for the Sentinels Solstice bash.
Poker Run will be $20.00 per hand, with a 25/75 split (25% to the winner / 75% to Face & Mary). There is a call for door prizes, etc. to add to the run. Pound-4-Pound will be also making special T-Shirts for the run with the proceeds going to Face & Mary.
The VNV have a tax deductible corporation (VISTA - Veterans In Service To Alaska), that will allow all donations to be charitable.
They want to keeps the groups small (less than 20 per group), to manage the run and traffic as it's high RV season.
