Some Tips After My Travels

So as may of you know I got to do some serious travel this month.

In traveling, I noticed LOTS of riders & how they rode in places like Denver & Orlando. So I wanted to share some observation & tips to everyone:

  • Please stay in the left side of the lane, especially if riding alone – the reason for this is that by riding on the right side you are placing yourself in the drivers blind spot…on purpose! Also consider that in places w/lots of tourists (e.g. Orlando), you are adding additional risk to yourself.
  • “Semi” safety gear is just stupid – riding a $10,000+ Harley-Davidson with a bicycle helmet (Seriously!) or riding with shorts & sandals on a six lane highway at 75mph is asking for trouble.
  • Your passenger is not cool, cute, etc. flashing passing vehicles – mind you I enjoyed the show, but distracting cages (especially at night) is just DUMB! I admit it…she’s hot, OK?!? OK.
  • Bobbing & weaving through traffic isn’t all that cool – in Orlando, I saw more road rage that I cared for. That being said, bobbing & weaving through traffic & then getting pissed off when a car follows honking & shouting is…well…just asking for it.
  • OBEY THE TRAFFIC LAWS – skip the trick riding…if you missed a turn on a crowded six lane artery in the heart of the city, riding on the sidewalk instead of going up a light to do a u-turn simply shows how DUMB you are and makes other bikers look bad.

From what I could gather from the “stunts” I observed, I have to assume that most of these riders had probably not taken a Motorcycle Safety Course and worse may not even have a motorcycle endorsement!

The one I saw the most was the riding in the right side of the lane. When I asked one rider why he rode on the right side, his response was “riding on the left side is unnerving”.

Unnerving?!?!? Why are you riding?

Regardless, in large metropolitan areas motorcyclists meed to be extra vigilant…especially in high tourist areas.

Sturgis Buffalo Chip, SD (April 20, 2010) - Michael Lichter's internationally renowned and highly anticipated 10th Annual Motorcycles as Art exhibition is sure to be a significant highlight during Sturgis Rally Week 2010. The exhibit is scheduled for August 7-13 and will focus on the explosion of interest and the passion for custom motorcycles seen over the last thirty years. Entitled, "Eternal Combustion- 30 in the Wind", this year's display poses the question, "How is this passion passed on through time?"
