Throttle Thunder – What A Ride!!!!

Minx and I got to ride in the Throttle Thunder ride from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

We didn’t finish the final leg, due to Minx’s back being so bad that she could barely walk on Sunday. However the part we were able to participate in was awesome to say the least.

We took off for Fairbanks on Friday the 18th. The Parks highway was great till Talkeetna…good roads very little road damage (though the same frost heave just before the Talkeetna cutoff was there as always). The bridge just before Trapper Creek is a one lane for road construction, but it was moving pretty quickly.

After that…it was the expected road damage – lots of frost heaves, tar snakes, and ruts…especially from Beyer’s Lake to Cantwell.

It was so bad in spots that Minx’s back was bruised in the bouncing. I have a 2005 Road King and had to increase the air shocks from 25 to 40 to compensate!

Once we made it to Denali Park the roads were better.  There were some rough spots between Denali Park and Healy but ti was smooth sailing from Nenana to Fairbanks!

On the ride back the higher air helped riding back, so we were able to make it home with the help of LOTS of Ibuprofen <smile>.

The only real challenge was the hail (yep…you read right hail) just before reaching Trapper Creek.

Regardless, of all the hiccups the 1st Throttle Thunder run was great! Hell…what other run offered a T-Shirt, six meals, a patch, and pin for $45.00 friggin dollars!?!?
