April is Check Your Helmet Month

Harley Davidson has a nice little campaign going on right now called “Check Your Helmet Month” – and I have to admit it’s a good idea. If you are the helmet-wearing type (of course I believe in personal choice), or live in a state that has a mandatory helmet law always make sure you are being fully protected.

Maybe your helmet took a fall while it was in storage, like a good smack on the concrete floor of your garage?

That can spell trouble… Take a moment before you head out for your next ride, and check for any cracks (no matter how small) on the surface of your helmet (and no…the cloth helmet bag doesn’t protect the helmet from falls).

Is there one? If so, it’s time to get a new helmet.

If you are lucky enough to have access to a scanner (like they have at Airports, Courts, etc) and you can see a damaged helmet, it may look fine on the outside but it will show up like a cracked egg in the XRay!

That’s because the method the helmet uses to protect your head is to spread the impact throughout the entire helmet.

Thus the simple rule that if the helmet is dropped, replace it.

A brain bucket with one or more cracks can split like an egg if it hits the ground hard again – and your head might be inside when it does.

Don’t let that happen!
